About HD |
|
Huntington’s Disease is a disorder of the central nervous system. It is a hereditary condition that can be passed on to people of either sex. It usually develops in mid-life, though can develop earlier or later. It affects about 6,000 people in the UK. People who have inherited the gene often have difficulties with walking, other movements, talking and swallowing as the condition takes hold. Mental and emotional changes can also be expected. There is no cure for HD as yet, but intensive research into treatment and prevention is being carried out worldwide. In the meantime, the symptoms can be managed. More information about research, symptoms and treatment can be found on the main HDA website. From here you can download specific fact sheets about different aspects of HD. |
